Keeping Kids Active
Children tend to have a limited attention span at times, especially boys. We want to keep their attention as much as we can. What are some ways we can get the students up and moving? Some activities, that involve the students out of their seats or activities that would require us to go outside. I just watched a video about an activity called vocabulary cheerleading which gets the students out of their seats and chants vocabulary words!

Any ideas you have would be helpful!

I am all about keeping students active. I think students sit all day and the only time they have to move around is Physical Education, and this is not enough for them. One way I observed in the classroom was a video called 'Lettersize," and it allowed students to stand up and workout to each letter. I loved this activity and it is mainly for the younger students, but they loved getting up and stretching out to the letters of the alphabet. There are a lot of great active educational videos and this was by far my favorite. I think the best way to get kids active is to get them to stand up and move around because their brain gets tired and they need to get their blood flowing again.
ReplyDeleteChelsea,
ReplyDeleteI remember watching that same video! I absolutely loved that idea! Just the other day in another class, we watched a video where the teacher incorporated an Anticipation Guide before they started a lesson. An Anticipation Guide is a pre-reading activity where students are given statements and they can agree or disagree. Instead of giving these students a worksheet, the teacher posted the statements around the room. Then, she gave students red and green stickers and she allowed them to go around the room and place stickers on the signs. This is something I will definitely use in my classroom. Even though this activity doesn't last the entire class period, it still gets them up and moving around.
I love both of your suggestions! These are great ways to get the students up and moving! While some people may think this causes disruption I think it is important to let them move sometimes. Sitting in a desk all day is not fun! I can't wait to use your ideas in my future classroom!
ReplyDeleteMovement is definitely important in the classroom! I love "brain breaks" to get my students back on track. I also like Adventure to Fitness, as it is educational and physical exercise that you can do right in the classroom! Music is also a great way to get students moving. We also play lots of games that gets them out of their chairs. School would be so boring if we just sat around all day!
ReplyDeleteMelanie,
ReplyDeleteI love all of your ideas! Music is a great way to get kids moving and could also be fun to use while they are working. I agree school would be so boring if we just sat around all day! I hope to keep my students moving!
